DOT Regulations
ARE YOU REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN A DOT MEDICAL CARD? IF YOU ANSWER YES TO ANYOF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS, YOU MUST MAINTAIN A MEDICAL CARD WHICH CAN BE AQUIRED BY PASSING A DOT PHYSICAL.
Are you a driver who operates a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) used on a highway in interstate commerce*** to transport passengers or property when the vehicle:
- Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, of 10,001 lbs or more, whichever is greater?
- Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation?
- Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, and is not used to transport passengers for compensation?
- Is used in transporting material found by the Secretary of Transportation to be hazardous under 49 U.S.C. 5103 and transported in a quantity requiring placarding under regulations prescribed by the Secretary under 49 CFR, subtitle B, chapter I, subchapter C?
- Do you hold a CDL License?
How do you determine if you are exempt from having to obtain a Medical Card?
If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you are the Exception to the ruling which means you are exempt from obtaining a medical card.
- Do you utilize your CDL to work for a State, Government or Municipality ONLY?
- Do you utilize your CDL to have a Farm Custom Operation or to operate a Farm Vehicle?
- Do you have a Apiarian Industry Job? (Bee Keeper)
- Do you hold a CDL license, own your own CMV, not for hire?
New Medical Card – CDL Regulation are in full swing and have to be completed by January 31, 2014.

***Interstate Commerce means trade, traffic or transportation in the United States—
- Between a place in a State and place outside of such State (including a place outside of the United States);
- Between two places in a State through another State or a place outside of the United States; or
- Between two places in a State as part of trade, traffic or transportation originating or terminating outside the State or the United States.
